Heavier bottles are perceived as containing more prestigious, or at least of higher quality wines.
Some markets are more sensitive to this topic, such as Asian markets, and producers that intend to export to them carefully think about their customer perception.

Some markets are more sensitive to bottle weights, such as China. Many producers, until recent times, were used to use heavier bottles specifically for these markets. Markets in which this bias is less invasive are possibly more sensitive to sustainability as a whole.

In 2023 Sustainable Wine Roundtable signed the Bottle Weight Accord aiming to reduce the average still wine bottle from 550g to 420g before the end of 2026.
